Housing a Quality Issue
13 November 2003
Within the framework of GAUDI, the CIVA Brussels
is working on a project devoted to innovative housing in Europe.
Whether these are individual houses or collective buildings, where
we live is certainly one of the main aspects of our daily life and yet
the architectural quality of the majority of these constructions leaves
much to be desired. It is for this reason that the awareness of the most
striking architectural successes and their theoretical appreciation could
be of great interest not only for criticism of architectural art but
also and especially for the decisions and specific choices made in this
crucial area.
The aim of the CIVA project is to ensure continuous networking between
scientific institutions and the tourist sector which focus on this subject
and to establish a genuine inventory of the most advanced research affecting
our living space and our way of life.

Five Minutes City, architecture and (im)mobility
Forum & workshop Rotterdam 2002
14 August 2003
This book is a result of a forum and workshop with Winy Maas, organised
and held at the Berlage Institute (Rotterdam), in collaboration with
the institut Français d’Architecture (Paris) and the Fundacio
Mies van der Rohe (Barcelona) in September 2002. It was the second in
a series of three workshops for young professionals organized as part
of the Gaudi programme (A3 project)
The workshop was attended by students from Barcelona, Delft, Ljubljana,
Rotterdam, Rouen and Zagreb.
The FiveMInutesCity is conceived by Winy Maas. It is a narrative, squeezed
in the format of a PowerPoint presentation with comic book flirtations.
It starts with a series of projects by MVRDV and the Berlage Institute.
It continues with a report of the forum and workshop in Rotterdam. It
concludes with a series of essays by the guest professors and lecturers.
What happens with cities when any position in them can be reached within
a certain time span and with a specific means of transport? What does
a place need when this goal is 2 hours, 1 hour or 5 minutes? How would
it be, the FiveMinutesCity?

Activating Environmental Consciousness
29 January 2003
Participation Tools - Activating Environmental Consciousness is
the first book in the series Topical European Urban Library,
which will develop as the Futuropa strand of the GAUDI project of European
architectural institutions proceeds. The subject of Futuropa is citizens'
participation in urban planning projects.
The book documents projects by four architectural institutions, whose
object has been to arouse the interest of citizens of various ages in
the built environment, to disseminate knowledge and to offer tools for
influencing urban planning.
The above-mentioned architectural institutions are: The Architecture
Foundation (London), CIVA, The international Centre for Urbanism, Architecture
and Landscape (Brussels), The Lighthouse (Glasgow) and The Museum of
Finnish Architecture (Helsinki).
