Forum and Workshop by Elia Zenghelis
Athens and Spetses
13-20 September 2003

The Berlage Institute organizes an international forum and workshop for young architects in collaboration with the Mies van der Rohe Foundation (Barcelona) and the Institut Français d’Architecture (Paris). This event is the third of a series of three within the framework of the GAUDI program. Local partners are the Greek Ministry of Culture and the Patras School of Architecture.

Brief
The brief is to investigate the possibilities of creation of a new type of metropolitan park on the site of the former airport at Hellinikon. The Hellinikon site provides 530 hectares for the development of parkscape with various urban programs. The brief for the studio is attached.

Preparation (homework)
In preparation for the workshop, each participating school is to form a team that will produce a proposal for its allocated sector, in accordance with the requirements set out in the attached brief. These proposals will be presented on the first day of the workshop in Athens, in a full-fledged review.

Reader
A careful study of the Reader should be made: the reader is being prepared by Professor Yannis Aesopos and his team at the Patras School of Architecture. The reader will be distributed to the participating schools on the 15th of July.

Master
The workshop will be mastered by Elia Zenghelis, architect and partner in Gigantes Zenghelis Architects, Brussels. The assistant to Elia Zenghelis will be Pier Vittorio Aureli. The workshop will be coordinated and the forum debate will be moderated by Vedran Mimica, assistant dean of the Berlage Institute.
External expert for the workshop is Adriaan Geuze (West 8, Rotterdam). As guest lecturers will be invited (among others) Peter Eisenman, Bernard Tschumi, Andrea Branzi, Alejandro Zaera-Polo and Stefano Boeri.

Participants
The workshop will have 32 participants from four countries:

  • Berlage Institute (Netherlands)
  • Patras School of Architecture (Greece)
  • Participants are selected by their schools.

Accommodation
The accommodation in Athens on 13 and 14 September and on 20 September will be announced. On the island of Spetses (15-19 September), participants will be accommodated in the facilities of the Anargyros School, an old boarding school built in the early 1920’s. The Patras School of Architecture will provide a dormitory and a studio space in two adjacent buildings, both on the beach.

Expenses
Participation and accommodation are free of charge. Travel expenses, meals and other costs are covered by the participants and/or their schools.

Publication
The results of the workshop and a report of the forum will be published and exhibited. The expected date of publication will be summer 2004.
