The First European Architecture Festival aims to initiate an event with the widest popular appeal, where the fun of discovery and celebration can be associated with a new perspective on contemporary architecture. We want to invite the citizens of every EUROPEAN city to become, for the duration of a special week-end, a privileged audience and active participants in their own town.
A diversity of small- and large-scale events will allow the general public to become acquainted with the various aspects of urban and architectural creation: for instance, a number of famous sites or significant buildings could be made generally accessible, visiting days could be organised in architectural studios or innovative houses. Nor should we neglect the possibility of staged events, concerts or light shows offering a genuine mise en scène of architecture. Every city will be free to imagine its own mode of involvement. There should only be one motto: to spread the enthusiasm for architecture by extending it outside of specialists, by means of festive, educational and artistic projects.
In order for such an undertaking to be successful, it is necessary to ensure moral and financial support from a variety of sponsors: local decision-makers, cultural institutions, NGOs and the private sector… Simultaneously scheduled in several European cities, the European Architecture Festival wishes to become a regular major cultural event, just like the European Heritage Days or the European Music Day.
Architecture as a Show
A a series of joint events in which architecture
is associated with dance, music, film and the theatre. A wide spectrum
of performances
and shows, based on or supported by contemporary architectural
pieces or major urban landscapes.
A Citizen's Architecture
Visiting days in major buildings, interactive
light shows, architectural promenades, urban treasury hunts for
junior audiences, as well
as guided tours of decision-making sites for each city.
Architectural Food
Original desserts or pastries based on famous
monuments or typical architectural details, edible architectural
models, specially designed
recipes named after "famous architects" … There
is food for all tastes when architecture is on the menu.
Architecture at school
A variety of pedagogical initiatives and playtime activities, from
architectural lessons to temporary buildings, with a selection
of games, opinion polls, contests or junior juries, planning a
child-sized imaginary city.
Architectural passion
An opportunity to discover professional architects sharing their
passion and revealing the tricks of their trade, during visiting
days in architectural firms or public sessions including multimedia
demo installations.
From Helsinki to London, from Barcelona to Cologne, from Brussels to Assisi, from Copenhagen to Vienna, from Grenoble to Rotterdam, here is a summary list of events and festivals that are already working to foreground architecture throughout Europe. Whether they last a single day, a week-end or a full week, they have one common objective : awakening the interest of the general public in contemporary architecture, clarifying its cultural significance and its impact on present and future urban planning.
