The GAUDI programme is supported by the Culture 2000 programme of the European Union.

C1: Create and develop a joint web site

Objectives

This web site will be the communication backbone of the GAUDI Programme and its interactive tool for communication and distribution. The site will be a quick and user-friendly way of obtaining information on architecture and other cultural aspects concerning the living environment. Furthermore, it will enable European citizens to become knowledgeable regarding the various facets of architecture and will provide them with an incentive to take active part in the improvement of their everyday environment. The site has the following purposes : federate the actions of Member Stéates’ centres of architecture (intranet function), disseminate to a broad public the information and materials which have been centralised through networking and constitute a cultural portal accessible to all audiences.

Nature of the action

The web site ‘www.architecture-forum.net,’ from which the proposed site will derive, is an initiative of the European Forum on Architectural Policies. This network of specialists on architectural policies was established at the European Meeting on Architecture held in September 1999 in Paris. The objective is that of strengthening European co-operation in the field of architectural policies, setting up a permanent information base, supporting the network of specialists and preparing the meetings held on a periodic basis. The development of the web site is supported financially by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication and the Netherlands Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

The site will contain official information of governments and administrative and cultural institutions, information provided by professionals, discussion forums, round tables and information letters (allowing for the possibility to send in suggestions and comments to enrich the site). It will include the database for public spaces (see project A4), and the inventory of innovative houses in Europe, which later on can be visited virtually (see project A1).

Each country has one or more correspondents who regularly monitor the information concerning their country and keep the information updated. Correspondents can propose issues for the ‘hot news’ section. The site will be bilingual, in English and French and furthermore, each country can also add information in its national language(s).

Proposed audience

In addition to being a source of up to date on architecture for the general public, the web site is also a place of exchange via its discussion forums.

It offers architecture enthusiasts, institutions and professional organisations access to information concerning the architectural policy of the fifteen member states of the European Union and the opportunity to exchange viewpoints and opinions thanks to the “ round tables. ” Furthermore, interested organisations and individuals can sign up to receive the newsletter.

The site will also attract new audiences such as students and schoolchildren, through the use of teaching tools and in this way will heighten awareness and foster a commitment to the creation of a better living environment.

Products - expected results

These two phases together constitute the pilot period during which the self-financing capacity of the site will be assessed. This will include the involvement of professionals and a commercial space with a banner to cover the management and maintenance of the site.
