A3: Workshops for young professionals

Objectives

Promote among young professionals critical thinking and consciousness of the social and cultural role of architecture. Encourage collective reflection on the role of architecture in contemporary society. Develop public awareness to emerging concepts on urban space and housing in Europe.

Nature of the action

In co-operation between IFA, the Mies van der Rohe Foundation -associated with Barcelona's Escuela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura- the Berlage Institute and local schools of architecture, a series of forums and workshops will be organised. They will dwell upon the experience of the workshop held in 2000 at the Venice Biennale, with the support of the European Union.

The workshops are held ‘in situ’ and can be followed on line on the Internet. The project will condense simultaneously a form and a workshop dealing wit new uses and practices in the work sphere and the domestic sphere. The goal of the project in to connect theses venues and to encourage innovative solutions. The project aims at mobilising young architects and representative of European cities participating to the debates.

The forum will mobilise participants in the transformation of urban practices dealing with work and residence. The debates are geared to urban officials and technicians, as well as to professionals engaged in architecture and urban development, to the young architects and to the larger audience.

The workshops will take place during a period of eight days after a period of preparation. Each host city will give an introduction, which includes presentations by local specialists (geographers, economists, planners, architects, sociologists). The lectures/talks will be given by guest European architects who will in turn provide time for exchange and debate with the students. The workshop will conclude with a public presentation of the work (produced during the workshop) before an international.

Each workshop will be led by a well–known architect or master. His/her role is to oversee the exercises, follow the work of the students, and co-ordinate the elements that will be used in the publication of a catalogue. It is possible for the same architect to lead the workshop for two sessions.

The Master will be aided by three critics chosen by the different institutions in partnership with this project and one additional critic chosen by the host city. Each of the four schools of architecture represented by the partner institutions will choose six students who are currently completing their studies or who have already completed a degree. The students will use the technology and materials with which they already accustomed computers and conceptual programs in order to produce their propositions.

Proposed audience

The workshops of young professionals are directed towards architects and urbanists currently completing their studies or beginning their professional activities, as well as, members of other cultural disciplines, such as writers, filmmakers, artists, social science researchers and philosophers. Therefore, in addition, other public and private figures will be present in this domain, such as decision-makers and local politicians, engineers, regional planners and media professionals.

Products, Expected Results

The workshops will result in a publication. However, more important are the non-material results produced by the workshop. The aim is to promote an attitude that is more conscience of the social significance and the culture of architecture in present-day society. The workshops will develop an account of these aspects according to those that conceive and live in cities and will contribute to encourage the participation of the public in the democratic decisions taken on the construction and the development of cities.

Distribution

The distribution of workshops is a fundamental element of the program. Even during the duration of the workshop the presence of a web-cam and web reporters will make them accessible to remote audiences. The results will be published in at least two languages, including the language of the host-country of the workshop. The publication will take the form of a book and/or CD-ROM, which will be largely distributed to architecture schools, professionals (architects and urbanists), elected officials, and urban decision makers.
